* "The penguin" as credited was a plush toy penguin that would lie around in the studio; because of the sometimes long hours people would fall asleep and others would place the penguin with them and take a Polaroid picture. The crew brought the penguin on the Sign O' The Times Tour as a crew mascot, and in Rotterdam (while shooting for the Sign O' The Times movie), the crew placed it behind the big mirror heart where Prince and Cat would lie against at the end of If I Was Your Girlfriend, when it was lowered down. The penguin was facing Prince as the heart came down, to the crew's enjoyment.

Housequake is the third track on the first disc of Prince’s ninth album Sign O’ The Times. Housequake was also included as the b-side for the album’s third single, U Got The Look. A live version was also included in the concert movie Sign O’ The Times.

Basic tracking took place on 18 October 1986 (the day after the public announcement of the Revolution’s disbanding), at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. Overdubs, including the party-style vocals, were added on 26 October 1986 (the day before Feel U Up), also at Sunset Sound.

The track was initially placed as the second track on the album Camille (to be credited to Camille), and was planned as the b-side of the single Shockadelica (also to be credited to Camille), but the single and the album were both aborted. It was then included as the third track on the first disc on the triple-album Crystal Ball, which was eventually pared down to become Sign O’ The Times.

Housequake (7 Minutes MoQuake) contains a sample from Crazay (written and performed by Jesse Johnson, featuring Sly Stone, from the 1986 album Shockadelica, after which Prince’s Shockadelica was named).

 • Housequake inspired a popular fan-site, www.housequake.com, which ran from 1997-2008. The title of the remix, 7 Minutes MoQuake, inspired a follow-up fan-site, www.moquake.com, which opened in 2010, but closed a year later.
 • "The penguin" as credited was a plush toy penguin that would lie around in the studio; because of the sometimes long hours people would fall asleep and others would place the penguin with them and take a Polaroid picture. The crew brought the penguin on the Sign O’ The Times Tour as a crew mascot, and in Rotterdam (while shooting for the Sign O’ The Times movie), the crew placed it behind the big mirror heart where Prince and Cat would lie against at the end of If I Was Your Girlfriend, when it was lowered down. The penguin was facing Prince as the heart came down, to the crew’s enjoyment.
