Purple House is the fourth track (third song) on the 2004 tribute album Power Of Soul: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix. The track is a cover version of the 1967 track Red House by The Jimi Hendrix Experience (written by Jimi Hendrix), which first appeared on Are You Experienced (1967).

The name of the track was changed by Prince to mirror his famous association with the color purple.

Recording dates and studio are unknown, but it is likely that basic tracking took place in 1999 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The track features Larry Graham (who had turned down an offer to play with Hendrix at the 1969 Woodstock festival, but played as bass player of Sly and the Family Stone) on bass guitar.

  • Prince had previously released Habibi, which was essentially a cover version of Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun
  • This song is a cover version of another artist's song. As such, any cover version of this song should not be considered a cover version of Prince's version (unless performed as Purple House), but of the original, and so these are not listed here.
