Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) is a 1978 song by American pop music group The Jacksons, which first appeared on their 1978 album Destiny, and was released as a single shortly before the album’s release. It is written by Michael Jackson and Randy Jackson.
Prince has performed the song live (with Elisa Dease singing lead vocals) following Mountains, beginning in late 2009.
In October 2009, a live version of the two-song medley, recorded for a short radio gig in Paris, France, was released as an mp3 download on lotusflow3r.com, known as Mountains-Shake Your Body.
No studio version by Prince is believed to exist.
Notably, this is the first Michael Jackson track to be released in any form by Prince, and was released four months after Jackson’s sudden death.
Other songs by Michael Jackson and/or The Jacksons/The Jackson 5 that Prince has covered live include Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough and I Want You Back.
Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) contains the line "Let’s dance, let’s shout, shake your body down to the ground". This chant was actually an adaptation of the chant "Let’s dance, let’s shout, gettin’ funky what it’s all about!" from Marvin Gaye’s 1977 song Got To Give It Up. This specific line was sung occasionally by Prince and the Revolution in concerts in 1986 (interpolation in America) and the track was covered in studio in 1993 (see (Got 2) Give It Up for details).
