I Wanna Be Your Lover was the first single from Prince's second album Prince, and was released in August 1979, two months prior to the album's release.

The b-side, My Love Is Forever, was taken from Prince's first album, For You.

In some territories, the single included Just As Long As We're Together (also taken from For You), Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? or I Feel For You (taken from Prince), instead of My Love Is Forever.

The single was Prince's biggest hit to date, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, number 3 in the Billboard Disco 100 chart and number 11 in the Billboard Hot 100.

It was certified Gold by RIAA on 18 March 1980, indicating a million copies shipped.
