Mountains was the second single to be released from Prince's eighth album Parade, the third album credited to Prince and the Revolution, and was released five weeks after the album's release. The b-side, Alexa De Paris, is not available on any album, but the extended version of the track was included on the European CD single of Letitgo in 1994.

The single reached number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and number 15 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles Chart.
