The Future was the fifth and final commercially-released single to be released from Prince’s eleventh album Batman (Trust had also been available as a promotional release in Hong Kong only). It was released eleven months after the album, and received a release in Europe only.
The single is notable as the first time the lead track was available only in remixed form. The tracks were remixed by noted producers and remixers William Orbit and Mark Moore, who also remixed Batdance.
The single failed to chart in the United Kingdom, but reached position 7 in The Netherlands and 39 in Germany.
