Six is the sixth track on Madhouse’s first album 8, and, one week before the album’s release, 6 was released as the album’s first and only single. Six was written and produced by Prince (credited only to Madhouse), with saxophone and musical input by Eric Leeds.
Basic tracking took place on 30 September 1986 at Prince’s Galpin Blvd Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota; It was the seventh Madhouse track from the batch and was therefor initially titled Seven but this was changed to Six after the album was sequenced and it was decided Six and Seven should switch places.
Other than the similarity in numbering and in music style, Six is not related musically to the single b-side Six And ½, that was originally titled nine and was only re-title Six And ½', after it was chosen as the b-side for 6
