Sweet Thing is a cover version of the track by Rufus featuring Chaka Khan (from the 1975 album Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, also released as a single in 1975). SymbolSmallerBlue.png released a live version of the track, featuring Chaka Khan on lead vocals, on the 1999 Beautiful Strange home video (which had been broadcast in full almost a year earlier, however, on the UK TV channel Channel 4).

Prince had, however, recorded a studio version of the track, as a home recording, in early-to-mid 1976 (within months of the song’s initial release), at the Russell Ave, Anderson house, Minneapolis, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions as Don’t You Wanna Ride?, Hey Lover, I Spend My Time Loving You, nine untitled Instrumentals, Leaving For New York, Nightingale and Rock Me, Lover).

The home recording of the song remains unreleased, but Prince has performed the song live many times, including on some TV broadcasts.

In 2004 Prince performed a live version of this song on The Art Of Musicology TV special, and in 2012 as a guest appearance with Mary J. Blige, who had released her own version of the song on her 1992 debut album What’s The 411? (also released as a single in 1993).
