The Gold Standard is the fourth track on Prince’s 37th album Art Official Age.

The track was first mentioned in a 23 June 2014 article by Jon Bream in the Minneapolis Star Tribune (along with This Could Be Us, a remix of Funknroll and an unnamed duet with Rita Ora).

It was mentioned as the opening track of an untitled album (which later evolved into Art Official Age), and was described as:
"Percolating electro-funk, an update of classic Prince with a lyric that referenced the notions of “wild and rude” from his previous days."

A tape photographed in Prince’s vault at Paisley Park Studios lists it as 27 October 2013 alluding the exact date for the recording at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
