The Jam is a cover version of the song by Graham Central Station, which first appeared on the 1975 album Ain’t No 'Bout-A-Doubt It (also released as a single), and is written by Larry Graham. began performing the song often beginning in early 1994; the song’s structure allows the lead singer to introduce each bandmember before that musician performs a solo. A performance of the track was included on the 1994 The Beautiful Experience TV-special. In 1996, a 1995 performance of the track was included on the Love 4 One Another TV-special.
It is believed that a studio performance of the track was recorded in early 1994 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was included as the tenth track on an early 1994 untitled album (believed to have been known as "The Gold Album" ), but was removed as the album was worked on further to become The Gold Experience.
