Vagina is a track recorded circa November 1981, at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. With only a vocal and guitar and no drums other than Prince’s vocal rhythm cues, the song has a somewhat unfinished feel to it.
The track was long thought to have been recorded for possible use on The Hookers album, that later became Vanity 6’s album Vanity 6, but given its ambiguous lyrics it seems unlikely this was actually the case. However, "Vagina" was the name Prince suggested Denise Matthews would go by when she joined the band. Allegedly she dismissed the moniker and agreed to Vanity instead, at which point the project was titled Vanity 6.
In 2019 the song was released as the fourth track on the Vault Tracks part 1 disc of a Super Deluxe Edition edition of the 1999 album.
