Breakfast Can Wait is a Prince video released for broadcast and to promote the single.
Danielle Curiel was recruited through Maya McClean and Nandy McClean, who contacted her on behalf of Prince who wanted her to direct his music video. She submitted a treatment and was allowed a budget to make the video. Apart from a few indications, Prince gave Curiel total artistic freedom on the project. The music video had to be a dance video and he wouldn't appear in it.
About the pitch, Curiel said:
The song is very literal (...) if he wants it to be big in the dance world, let’s make this song make sense with dance.
Instead of making it super sexual, I thought “Breakfast can wait—for dance.” Instead of staying in one place, we entered into this imagination world, in their heads. They’re in the kitchen, and this is in their heads.
Auditions for dancers took place in Movement Lifestyle, North Hollywood, California on 7 September 2013. Rehearsals were scheduled on 16 September 2013 and the music video itself was shot on 19 & 20 September 2013 in Los Angeles. Danielle Curiel announced on Twitter that the music video was completed on 28 September 2013. On 9 October 2013 a music video teaser was posted on 3rdEyeGirl's Youtube account and promoted by both Danielle Curiel and 3rdEyeGirl on their respective Twitter accounts.
The video was released on 11 October 2013, made available via Vevo where it was heavily promoted, reaching more than 1 million views within a week.
