Cream is a Prince and the New Power Generation video released for broadcast and to promote the single.
This video is notable for being the first to have a long introduction before the song begins. In this intro, Prince arrives in a train station with Diamond and Pearl, ignoring the journalists who ask him if he considers himself as a modern-day Mozart, if he has any plans for a new movie or if he is in love. Music from Gett Off and its Houstyle remix can be heard in the background as other people (including Levi Seacer, Jr. sporting his Robert Johnson look) are buying train tickets to go to Minneapolis. A conversation ensues between a Don Corleone lookalike (as incarnated by Marlon Brando in the 1974 movie The Godfather) and his daughter or girlfriend who wants to go to Minneapolis. The man mistakes the city for a Greek restaurant and asks who is this prince the girl wants to seduce (his line "who's this prince" will later be sampled for the "N.P.G Remix" of Cream). Interestingly, the Godfather theme is reinforced when these characters are on screen with the background music that draws inspiration from the soundtrack from the movies. A longer version of the intro was included on the Diamonds And Pearls Video Collection with additional scenes at a barber shop among others.
Cream was directed by Rebecca Blake, who also did the Kiss video in 1986. It was partly shot at the Union Station in Los Angeles, California. Stylistically, the video mixes a 1930's era costumes, props and background with more contemporary hip hop characters. Although the video features many dancers dressed in sexy clothes during the performance of the song, it is less overtly provocative than Gett Off and more inspired by Busby Berkeley's work than Caligula.
The video was included on the Diamonds And Pearls Video Collection and The Hits Collection.
