I Wanna Be Your Lover is a Prince video released for broadcast and to promote the single. It is Prince’s first video to have been broadcast as no videos were made for either of the two previous singles Soft And Wet and Just As Long As We’re Together.
The video shows Prince singing, playing various instruments: keyboards, drums, guitar and bass. He is also seen dancing and playing with a red scarf attached to his mic. The video looks to have been interpreted as a attempt to market Prince as a prodigy multi-instrumentalist (a potential new Stevie Wonder).
The video was included on The Hits Collection in 1993.
Another video was shot with Prince’s band but it was never aired and remains unreleased. The videos are two separate run-throughs of the song and neither contains any shots also present in the other.

- The video features Prince playing an Orr bass, (named after its luthier Charles Orr), an instrument Prince used to record almost all the basslines on For You album. The bass had seldom been seen or cited in credits since 1978, but made an appearance in the My Name Is Prince video. Prince also uses a Gibson L6-S Deluxe guitar (customized with red blinking led lights), an instrument he would stop using after having heavily customizing it, until he ultimately opted for the Hohner Telecaster guitar in 1980.
- Footage of I Wanna Be Your Lover was later included in the Purple Medley video.
