- When Prince started to play What Have You Done For Me Lately in 1986, he often asked the crowd « Who wrote that ? » causing debates whether or not he was involved in the writing the song. It was probably more of a tease or a provocation towards his former colleagues than anything else. However Morris Day has said in an interview that Prince recorded songs after hearing grooves created by The Time members during rehearsals and considered them to be 'his' songs as the band was signed to his company. What Have You Done For Me Lately may contains musical ideas that originate from one these rehearsals and used by Prince on one his songs that remains unreleased, but that’s purely speculative and he did not claim a credit at the ASCAP like he did for the song Pandemonium. The original version of What Have You Done For Me Lately was recorded Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis after they were fired from The Time and intended for a project called 'The Secret' planned to be released in 1984. That album remained on the shelves and some of the songs were given to other artists over the years. They rewrote some of the lyrics with Janet Jackson and included it in Control.
