Newpower Soul is the first track on the New Power Generation’s third and final ’solo' album Newpower Soul. Although re-using the phrase "new power soul", it is unrelated to the song New Power Soul, which was included on the New Power Generation’s second album Exodus. The song re-uses some lyrics from Big Fun, however, also from the album Exodus.
While specific recording dates are now known, the album was recorded between May 1997 and February 1998, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. On 20 February 1998, Love4OneAnother.com announced that Prince was deciding between Mad Sex, Newpower Soul and Push It Up as the first single, but it is not known if artwork or tracklists were compiled for these singles.
A rap in the song mentions the song titles of each (credited) track on the album in the order in which they appear (a technique Prince has also employed in songs such as Push and Ol' Skool Company).
