Girl 6 is the soundtrack album to the 1996 Warner Bros. movie Girl 6, directed by Spike Lee.

All of the music in the movie was by Prince and his associated artists; the bulk of it was previously-released. Spike Lee submitted the idea to Prince of ​​making a film built around his songs when he met him in 1990 during the shooting of Graffiti Bridge. Prince agreed on the condition that he could choose the songs that would be included in the film and the soundtrack.

The album contained three previously-unreleased tracks, She Spoke 2 Me (later released in a longer version on The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale) and Don’t Talk 2 Strangers, both by Prince, and Girl 6, by the New Power Generation.

A note of thanks to Prince written by Spike Lee was included in the booklet.

The album caused some confusion, since it used the name "Prince" heavily, while Prince had changed his name to SymbolSmallerBlue.png almost three years earlier.

Prince put out a press release to say that the songs were recorded before the name change, but in fact the song Girl 6, credited to the New Power Generation but featuring lyrics and production credited to "Prince", was recorded in December 1995, two and a half years after the name change.


Promotion

The album produced one single, Girl 6, by the New Power Generation.

The album reached number 75 on The Billboard 200 Chart, and number 15 on the Billboard R&B Albums chart.
