Erotic City (full title copyrighted as Erotic City ("Make Love Not War Erotic City Come Alive")) was released as the b-side of the single Let's Go Crazy, the second single to be released from Purple Rain, released worldwide. In early 1985, Erotic City was also available as a promotional 12" single in the UK only.
In 1989, a CD single of Erotic City was released in Germany. In 1993, it was included as the ninth track on The B-Sides compilation (included as the third and final disc on The Hits / The B-Sides).
In 1996, the song was also included as the seventh track on the soundtrack album Girl 6 (a compilation of music by Prince and associated artists for the movie Girl 6, directed by Spike Lee), and was also included as the third and final track on the accompanying CD single Girl 6.
The extended version, Erotic City ("Make Love Not War Erotic City Come Alive") was placed on an early version of the 2006 Warner Bros. compilation Ultimate, but Prince asked for its removal, likely due to its explicit lyrics, and it was not on the final configuration.
Basic tracking took place on 25 March 1984 at Sunset Sound.
Although credited to Prince and the Revolution, only Prince and Sheila E. contributed to the track.
Erotic City is notable as the first Prince release to contain input from Sheila E. (although her album The Glamorous Life, mostly written, performed and produced by Prince, was released six weeks earlier.
