Pheromone is the third track on Prince's fifteenth album Come. In April 1993, however, an instrumental version of the track was used as the theme music for BET's Video LP show. Pheromone was also included in the 1993 Glam Slam Ulysses stage-show, during the segment titled "Circe" (credited, as was the whole project, to SymbolSmallerBlue.png). In 1994, four months before the album's release, the promotional video of Pheromone was included in The Beautiful Experience TV movie (again credited, as was the whole project, to SymbolSmallerBlue.png).

While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in January 1993 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (during the same set of sessions that produced Papa and Dance Of Desperation). After an instrumental version was used for BET's Video LP show in April 1993, the full studio version was premiered at Glam Slam in Minneapolis on 5 June 1993, where a listening booth was set up for people to listen to Pheromone and another unidentified track on headphones (2gether was premiered the same day at a party in Detroit). Lyric sheets for both songs were also present, but they were stolen, causing the planned after-party at Paisley Park Studios to be canceled. The song was premiered on European radio on 4 March 1994, along with several other new studio and live tracks. The track was originally included as the fourth track on a March 1993 configuration of Come. It was also included on a configuration mentioned by Mayte in a letter to the fan magazine Controversy # 42 dated 29 May 1993. It was kept for inclusion as the fifth track on the 11 March 1994 configuration of Come. The album version begins with a segment of Poem which was edited out when the track became Orgasm (Race, Dark and Letitgo include other segments in their opening seconds).

Prince has stated that Carmen Electra provided inspiration for the song.
