Basic tracking for Rebirth Of The Flesh took place on 28 October 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (the day after a re-recording of Feel U Up, the same day as Rockhard In A Funky Place, two days before Good Love). A version with an edited, shortened ending was included as the first track on the 5 November 1986 configuration of the Camille album (credited to the pseudonym Camille), which was later aborted. A few weeks later, it was included as the first track on the first disc of the triple-album Crystal Ball on the 30 November 1986 configuration. The track was removed when the album was eventually pared down and became Sign O’ The Times.
The full version as recorded in 1986 was released in September 2020 on one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe set. The song is listed as Rebirth Of The Flesh (with original outro) although no other studio version with a different outro was released.
A rehearsal version from 1988 (labeled Rebirth Of The Flesh (Rehearsal '88)), from rehearsals for an aborted USA Tour in 1988, was released as an mp3 download as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 8. No other details about musicians, recording date or location were given, but Greg Brooks is audible and also named in the song, which dates it to being recorded somewhere before mid February 1988 when he and Wally Safford left the band. The studio version remains unreleased.
