Hate U is a Prince (as ) video made for broadcast and to promote the single. It was premiered on 25 November 1995 at a Paisley Park party, more than two months after the release of the single, and five days before the release of Gold. The video was very rarely shown on television at the time as it was allegedly blocked by Prince for some unknown reason. It was believed that this was due to his refusal to support an album The Gold Experience released by Warner Bros. But this theory is inconsistent because this is a fully produced video in which he appears (contrary to Letitgo); he also released the Gold video around the same time which was broadcast widely to promote the second single from The Gold Experience.
Hate U was recorded on 22 October 1995 at Paisley Park Studios and Galpin Blvd. Home, Chanhassen, Minnesota (scenes with Mayte on a balcony and dancing in body stocking in front of television).
In this video, Mayte is on trial because she was caught by Prince flirting with another man in a cafe. In a court setting chaired by Michael B., with Morris Hayes, Tommy Barbarella and Sonny T. (all wearing blindfolds) as the jury, Prince and Mayte confront each other through dance. Throughout the video, there are shots of Mayte being hypnotized by a pendulum and dancing in Prince’s house.
