|introduction              = '''Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)''' is the seventh track on [[Prince]]’s fifth album [[Album: 1999|1999]], and, eleven months after the album’s release, it was included as the b-side of the album’s fourth single, [[Single: Automatic|Automatic]], released in Australia only.

On [[Prince_Vault:Selected_anniversaries/October 31|31 October 2013]], a rehearsal recording of [[Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)]], recorded on [[Prince_Vault:Selected_anniversaries/October 30|30 October 2013]] at [[Paisley Park Studios]], was made available on the [[3rd_Eye_Girl_Streams|3rdEyeGirl YouTube account]] as a static video with artwork by [http://www.bystellablu.com Stella Blu]. On [[Prince_Vault:Selected_anniversaries/November 1|1 November 2013]], the same rehearsal recording was made available on the [[3rdEyeTunes.com]].

A different early take of the song was released in 2019 as the eleventh track on the ''Vault Tracks part 1'' disc of a ''Super Deluxe Edition'' edition of the [[Album: 1999 Deluxe|1999]] album.

Basic tracking  of the initial version took place at [[Prince]]’s [[Kiowa Trail Home Studio]] in Chanhassen, Minnesota, in mid-April 1982. 
[[Prince]] mixed the song on [[Prince_Vault:Selected_anniversaries/April 28|28 April 1982]] (on the same day as recording [[How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore]], a day after an original, unused recording of [[Raspberry Beret]] and four days before [[Automatic]]) at [[Sunset Sound]] in Hollywood, California. He then proceeded to record the song over the next couple of days resulting in the version that was released on [[Album: 1999|1999]].
