Description

A softcover songbook compilation of sheet music for the 11 songs featured on Prince’s fifth full-length studio album, 1999. Unlike other songbooks associated with albums, this was released in 2007, many years after the original album release.

Musical notation

For each song, chord diagrams for six-string guitar are published above the musical staff, which comprises a top stave for the vocal melody and the main lyric running beneath. Under these are the complementary treble and bass staves for piano, all in standard musical notation.

In common with many songbooks for popular artists, the music and lyrics are not provided as accurate transcriptions of the original album recording. In particular, passages of longer songs and some of Prince’s lead vocal and spoken words are not included. In some instances (Little Red Corvette, All The Critics Love U In New York, D.M.S.R., Free, Lady Cab Driver and International Lover) songs are presented with a new 'Optional Ending' in addition to the original recording’s Repeat and Fade. In contrast, the published score for Delirious only provides a Repeat and Fade Coda rather than reflecting the song ending featured on the album.

All songs are transcribed in the same key as the original recording apart from Little Red Corvette, which is marked 'Recorded half a step higher'. This is likely done to make the song easier to play for less-proficient musicians.

Design and other content

The front cover replicates the album cover artwork, originally hand-drawn by Prince, as a background, now with ‘Piano Vocal Guitar’ (in white) above the larger book title ‘PRINCE 1999’ (pale yellow), both featuring top center. The distributor’s name and corporate logo are displayed bottom center of the cover.

The book’s black spine displays, again in white lettering: ‘Prince 1999’ (top), ‘Piano Vocal Guitar’ (middle) and ‘Hal Leonard’ (bottom) with the corporate logo (yellow and black).

The back cover uses the same purple color for a plain background, listing the songs in the order they featured on the original album recording. Song titles are cantered with the same typeface, in bold, as that used on the original paper inner sleeves for the 2-disc LP. The lettering is in yellow, similar to its appearance on some CD back covers for the album. The bottom of the back cover displays barcodes for retail and catalog number (left corner) and ISBN numbers (right corner) in white rectangles, with publisher and distributor details in white lettering between.

Page 1 has the front cover background (without Prince’s hand-drawn titles) in dark grey and white. Similar title information to the front cover is supplemented by ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 numbers, contact details for the distributors and a general copyright warning to protect all works contained in the book. Page 3 displays the book contents (page numbers placed to the left of corresponding song titles (white lettering against a dark grey background) in the same typeface as the book’s rear cover. Although the songs are again listed in the original album running order, the sheet music for All The Critics Love U In New York is published between Let’s Pretend We’re Married and D.M.S.R..

The sheet music, starting on page 4, uses typefaces not featured on the original album artwork. Each song’s first page credits 'Words and Music by PRINCE' (top right-hand corner) and includes a copyright notice: 'Copyright (C) CONTROVERSY MUSIC 1982 All Rights Controlled and Administered by UNIVERSAL MUSIC CORP. ALL Rights Reserved Used by Permission' (page footer, center).
