Whitecaps is the fifth track on Prince's 36th album Plectrumelectrum (the first by Prince and 3rdEyeGirl), and was released four weeks earlier as a pre-order download, hours after the track was debuted by Vibe.com. It was also available to purchase separately (on the same day U Know was released to promote Art Official Age).

The track features lead vocals by Hannah Ford.

While specific recording dates are not known, it is likely the track was recorded in 2013 or early 2014, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota. It was first mentioned in an interview with Mojo Magazine released in February 2014.
