Pain was released as a stand-alone track by Rosie Gaines, shortly after Prince’s passing in 2016. The song was planned to be the b-side of My Tender Heart in 1994, the first single from her planned debut album Concrete Jungle but both the single and album were canceled. Pain was offered to Chaka Khan and released in a re-recorded version on Living Single, the soundtrack album to the Fox TV series Living Single. This single was the first previously-unreleased material to be officially released after Prince’s passing. It is not known if it was done with The Estate’s consent however.
