Glam Slam ’91 was initially tracked on 29 October 1991, after choosing smaples to use for it some days prior. The song was further worked on in early November creating a slightly longer version called Glam Slam ’91 – Hype Mix. A edit of a little over 5 minutes premiered on Twin Cities public radio station WLOL on 6 January 1991. It was sent to them to promote Prince’s newly opened Glam Slam club in Minneapolis, and was played on the station several times that day.

While it shares its title with the 1988 song Glam Slam, it can hardly be considered a revised or alternative version.
