Glam Slam ’91 was initially tracked on 29 October 1991, after choosing smaples to use for it some days prior. The song was further worked on in early November creating a slightly longer version called Glam Slam ’91 – Hype Mix. A edit of a little over 5 minutes premiered on Twin Cities public radio station WLOL on 6 January 1991. It was sent to them to promote Prince’s newly opened Glam Slam club in Minneapolis, and was played on the station several times that day. While it shares its title with the 1988 song Glam Slam, it can hardly be considered a revised or alternative version. Instead Glam Slam ’91, forecasts Gett Off with its 'Everybody grab a body, pump it like you want somebody/wanna party' chorus and the ‘Peter Paul’s Almond Joy’ and ‘Paisley crib’ raps which are almost identical to the ones in Gett Off Musically it mostly uses samples and parts from Love Machine, first recorded in the summer of 1989. It also includes segments of Candy Dulfer’s saxophone playing that weren’t used in the released version of Love Machine. It also uses a sample from Madhouse’s Twelve, while the 'Glam Slam' chorus is lifted from Escape. In 2023 the Hype Mix version (but simply titled Glam Slam ’91) was released as one of the songs on the Diamonds And Pearls Super Deluxe Edition.
