| A softcover songbook compilation of sheet music for the 16 songs featured on Prince’s ninth full-length studio album, Sign O’ The Times.
Musical notation For each song, chord diagrams for six-string guitar are published above the musical staff, which comprises a top stave for the vocal melody and the main lyric running beneath. Spoken words are published in italics. Under these are the complementary treble and bass staves for piano, all in standard musical notation. For the instrumental, Venus De Milo, the score simply comprises the treble and bass staff for piano. In common with many songbooks for popular artists, the music and lyrics are not provided as accurate transcriptions of the original album recording. In particular, musical passages of some songs and some of Prince's lead vocal and spoken words are often not included. The arrangement for each song is presented in the same key as the original recording. Design and other content The songbook seeks to replicate the appearance of the album cover and content. The book's front and back covers replicate photographs (now cropped) from the album's outer sleeve. The original album artwork did not have a title printed on the front cover. Instead, PRINCE above the stylised, SIGN “☮︎” THE TIMES in the typography used for most of the album was printed on a heart-shaped sticker fixed to the transparent shrink wrap in which the album was sold. This heart, complete with the same text, has been recreated and superimposed on the front cover of the song book (top right). The book's back cover similarly recreates the track listing as presented on the album, but without 'PRODUCED, ARRANGED, COMPOSED , AND PERFORMED BY PRINCE' and 'INCLUDES:' above the list of songs, and excluding 'EXCEPT WHERE INDICATED', beneath the list. The back cover footer includes publisher details (corporate logos and contact address), 'CONTROVERSY MUSIC (center) and book price and catalog code (right), all in purple. The book's spine is black with PRINCE SIGN “☮︎” THE TIMES at the top, and 'Printed in the U.S.A.' towards the bottom, followed by the catalog code, all in peach. Page 1, as the title page, replicates the heart (with the same text) from the front cover in the top right corner, together with copyright notices for corporate rights held relating to photography, art and music in the book (footer, center) all on a white background. Pages 2 and 3 replicate the photographs of Cat Glover (page 2) and Prince (page 3) used on one of the two album vinyl inner sleeves. The image (also cropped) of Prince seated and wearing glasses from the other album inner vinyl sleeve features on page 4. Page 5 of the book is the Contents page. Against a white background, the album song titles are listed in the album sequence shown on the back cover in the centre of the page. Each song's corresponding title page number is underneath its title, all lettering in black. The sheet music starts on page 6, with each song printed in the running order of the album. For the first page of each song's sheet music, the song title is printed (top center) in bold uppercase, and beneath reads, 'Words and Music by' followed underneath by the credited writer(s), again in bold lettering. Each title page also has CONTROVERSY MUSIC copyright notice for the year of the album release. The inside front and back covers are plain white. | ||||
