In the UK and Europe it was released as the album’s fourth single, following Girls & Boys.

Basic tracking took place on 16 December 1985 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (the day before Love On A Blue Train). Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in late-December 1985 - early 1986 at Monterey Sound Studios in Glendale, California. Although presumably the whole song was scored by Clare Fischer, only a small bit of it can be heard in the final release. When Anotherloverholenyohead was scheduled as a single, Prince asked Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss to overdub a horn section to the 'Extended Version' based on the arrangement they had been playing live; these horn overdubs were recorded without Prince present on 17 June 1986 at Creation Studios, Minneapolis, MN, USA (following after a full-band session earlier that day, in which Data Bank, Can’t Stop This Feeling I Got and We Can Fuck were recorded). |recording info = |- align="left" |style="border-top:1px dotted #ccc;"|16 December 1985 - 17 December 1985 |style="border-top:1px dotted #ccc;"|Sunset Sound,
