Do Unto Others is an unreleased song initially written and recorded by the vocal group formed by the Blackshire brothers (Johnny, DuJuan and Kip) in 1997 for a planned album (which also remain unreleased). The song was sent to Morris Hayes whom they knew from the time he was still living in Arkansas. This connection led them to move to Minneapolis, Minnesota and join [[Band: New Power Generation|The New Power Generation] in 1999 (with and Kip on keyboards and bacKground vocals, and Johnny and DuJuan as occasional vocalists). When Prince (the ) heard the song, he decided to rewrite the music and started to play the new version in rehearsals with the Blackshire brothers. The chorus of Do Unto Others was sung occasionally during shows in 1999 over the music of (Sometimes I Feel Like A) Motherless Child but the new version of the track is not believed to have been performed live by Prince.
The line ‘‘do unto others as you would have them do to you’’ is a variation of the Golden Rule] that Prince would later change for the lyrics of If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life (‘do onto others, as they do onto you’). The songs are otherwise unrelated.
The new version of Do Unto Others was never re-recorded in studio and both versions remain unreleased.
