A softcover songbook compilation of sheet music for the 9 songs featured on Prince’s seventh full-length studio album, Around The World In A Day.
Musical notation For each song, chord diagrams for six-string guitar are published above the musical staff, which comprises a top stave for the vocal melody and the main lyric running beneath. Spoken words are published in italics. Under these are the complementary treble and bass staves for piano, all in standard musical notation. In common with many songbooks for popular artists, the music and lyrics are not provided as accurate transcriptions of the original album recording. In particular, musical passages of some songs and some of Prince's lead vocal and spoken words are often not included. The arrangement for each song is presented in the same key as the original recording. Design and other content The songbook seeks to replicate the look of the album cover and content, designed by Laura LiPuma. However, because of the difference in dimensions of the album to the songbook, the top fifth (approximately) of the book's outer cover is decorated with the same multi-coloured pattern that adorns the front cover painting's background hills. (The hills are deliberately painted to resemble a sideways outline of a reclining female, viewed from lower leg to breast). Beneath the patterned strip is Doug Henders' painting from the original album cover. The image of the boy holding a red balloon, emblazoned with 'Prince and the Revolution' in yellow, and 'Around The World In A Day' in green, is printed on the front cover, the style of lettering reminiscent of the 1960's hippie counterculture. The boy is depicted afloat in the sky, with his balloon in the top left corner. Unlike the original album, the song titles featured in the book are published on the rear cover in the top patterned strip, split into two columns representing the song order as they appeared on Sides 1 and 2 of the original vinyl and cassette tape releases. The titles appear in white using the individual typographies chosen by Prince for each song. The back cover footer has the publisher's corporate logo and contact details, and parent company details (left), 'CONTROVERSY MUSIC' (center), all in pink; and the book price for the USA and Catalog code in white (right). Again unlike the album, the book's spine has white lettering that reads, 'PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION' and 'AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY' in the top half, with 'Printed in the U.S.A.' lower down and the catalog code at the bottom. The name of the group and book title are presented with a mixture of typographies, but different from the colored lettering that features on the spine of the extra flap of the vinyl release. The inside cover and page 1 (title page) use the same pattern from the multicoloured background hills on the cover painting. The boy and his balloon are superimposed at the top to provide the songbook title and corporate copyright notices for the book content's art and music in white lettering using mixed typographies (footer, center). Pages 2 and 3 largely replicate the landscape scene referred to as the 'innerspread' on the original album credits. Due to the dimensions of the book, the original image has been cropped marginally, with the song lyrics now presented closer together. Unlike the album artwork, a representation of 'Prince and the Revolution' in a circular shape, using the typographic style featured on the boy's balloon on the front cover has been removed, although a similar depiction of the album title has been retained but moved nearer to the lower right corner. The song titles, writing credits and lyrics are mostly presented in the same colors and mixed typographies as the original album artwork. They also feature in the same general layout, but with their positions marginally adjusted. Whereas the lyric in 'Pop Life', "What u putting in your nose, Is that where all your money goes", which appeared in the original album artwork in white (likely to refer to the color of cocaine in powder form), is now in the same orange lettering as the rest of the song's lyrics. The original photography and subsequent photo illustration are credited to Nancy Bundt and Dan Chapman respectively on the original album. However, these and almost all other credits that featured at the end of each song and in the final column are removed in the book. The credit beneath the lyrics to 'Temptation' that reads, 'Saxophone by Eddie M.. Recorded at Capitol Records by David Leonard' therefore likely remains only as an oversight. The message, '"All thanks 2 God" - Prince & The Revolution' also remains but is now in green lettering instead of white. A copyright notice, "All Titles (C) 1985 CONTROVERSY MUSIC All rights reserved" replaces a similar "All songs" notice on the album. The New York P.O.Box correspondence address also remains. Page 4, uses the same patterned background as the inside cover, for the book's Contents page. Song titles are listed in alphabetical order to the left of the page, with the corresponding page reference to the right of title, all using each title's individual typography. The sheet music begins on page 5, with the songs published through the rest of the book in album sequence. Each song title page presents its song title (top, center) again using its individual typography. Beneath is a credit for 'Words and Music by' followed by the credited writer(s), all using mixed typographies. The same lettering treatment is applied (in the footer, center of each song title page) to the copyright notice for CONTROVERSY MUSIC. The writing credits are identical to those on the original album artwork. The patterned inside back cover is identical to the inside front cover. |
