Description

A softcover songbook compilation of sheet music for the 9 songs featured on Prince’s tenth full-length studio album, Lovesexy.

Musical notation

For each song, chord diagrams for six-string guitar are published above the musical staff, which comprises a top stave for the vocal melody and the main lyric running beneath. Spoken words are published in italics. Under these are the complementary treble and bass staves for piano, all in standard musical notation.

In common with many songbooks for popular artists, the music and lyrics are not provided as accurate transcriptions of the original album recording. In particular, musical passages of some songs and some of Prince's lead vocal and spoken words are often not included.

The arrangement for each song is presented in the same key as the original recording.

Design and other content

The songbook seeks to replicate the appearance of the album cover and content. The book's front cover replicates Jean Baptiste Mondino's album cover photograph (now cropped). The original album artwork did not have a title printed on the front cover. Instead, PRINCE (in blue) and LOVESEXY (in pink) in the typography used for most of the album was printed on a white rectangular sticker fixed to the transparent shrink wrap in which the album was sold. With no such sticker or printed copy of it used here, the book therefore has no title on the front cover. The back cover replicates the album back cover, which lists the album song titles in the album sequence, superimposed over the words of the rap from the song, Alphabet St..

The back cover footer includes publisher details (corporate logos and contact address) and book price and catalog code (right), all in pink. Aligned to the right (spine) edge of the back cover are corporate copyright notices and 'Printed in the U.S.A.' The book's spine is white and simply states: 'PRINCE LOVESEXY' at the top.

Page 1, as the title page, reads PRINCE LOVESEXY, replicating the title as the text originally appeared on the album front cover sticker (top, center) together with the CONTROVERSY MUSIC copyright notice (footer center, in blue) on a white background. Pages 2 and 3 largely replicate the two sides of the album's vinyl inner sleeve. However, page 2 is a copy of the song titles (pink) and lyrics (blue) from Side 2 of the album on vinyl and tape (starting with Lovesexy), and page 3 then lists song titles with lyrics from Side 1 of the album (starting with Eye No). Additionally, the text 'Words by Prince' has been inserted beneath each song title before the lyrics. All other content (graphics, credits and copyright text) remains the same as the album inner sleeve.

Page 4, the Contents page, uses the same text as the back cover but with the corresponding page number for each song underneath each song title. However, the titles are listed alphabetically and this results in the lines from the Alphabet St. rap, which featured underneath the song title, now appearing out of sequence when read as they appear on the page.

The sheet music starts on page 5, with each song printed in the running order of the album. For the first page of each song's sheet music, the song title is printed (top center) using the album's chosen typography, and beneath reads, 'Words and Music by PRINCE'. Each title page also has CONTROVERSY MUSIC copyright notice for the year of the album release. As on the album inner sleeve, the title for Lovesexy is followed by: "The feeling U get when U fall in love not with a girl or boy but the heavens above".

The inside front and back covers are plain white.
