Baltimore is a Prince video released in the wake of events occuring in the United States following the death of Freddie Gray.
The song itself was initially written and released in April 2015 in response to the death of 25-year-old African-American man Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Maryland, and the resulting riots taking place over the days prior to the song’s recording.
The video compiles footage of protests and newspaper articles about the deaths of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown. It also contains photographs taken by Ralston Smith (the director of this video) of the Rally 4 Peace concert Prince gave on 10 May 2015 in Baltimore.
The video ends with a quote by Prince: "The system is broken. It's going to take the young people to fix it this time. We need new ideas, new life..."
The very same quote is used as an opening statement in the 2018 Mary Don’t You Weep music video.
The video was re-uploaded by The Prince Estate on the streaming platforms in conjunction with the events following the death of George Floyd in Prince’s hometown, Minneapolis, Minnesota on 25 May 2020.
