Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On is a song first recorded by Big Maybelle in 1955 and popularized by Jerry Lee Lewis when he covered the track in 1957. A cover version by Prince recorded during a rehearsal (most likely around 1998-1999) was included as the finale of the NPG Ahdio Show # 11 (part of NPG Music Club Edition # 12, the final edition of the first year of the NPG Music Club) in a medley with Courtin’ Time. On this version, Prince sings the lyrics of the song over the music of Courtin’ Time.
Prince started performing the song live in 1986 on the Parade Tour (and during at least one soundcheck in 1985 on the Purple Rain Tour. The version played on 07 June 1986 at the Cobo Arena, Detroit, Michigan was included on the concert film Parade Live, which was aired in Japan and several European countries.
Specific dates and location for the recording included on the NPG Ahdio Show # 11 are not known, but it is believed to have been recorded during a rehearsal, most likely in 1998 or 1999 (Courtin’ Time was played live only during that era and Prince mentions Jackie Brown on the guitar, which is probably a nickname given to Mike Scott, Kirk Johnson and Morris Hayes who were all three in Prince’s band at that time).
No studio version by Prince of Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On is believed to exist.
