Purple And Gold was first available as an audio stream on www.vikings.com, the website of the National Football League team the Minnesota Vikings (a clip of the song was played earlier that day on Fox News in Minneapolis, MN, USA).

Initial tracking took place on 17 January 2010 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, during the evening after Prince attended the Minnesota Vikings NFC Divisional Playoff game, where the Vikings beat the Dallas Cowboys 34-3.

The song is a traditional football fight song, with a slow beat and chanted lyrics. Lines like The veil of the sky draws open. The roar of the chariots touch down and We come in the name of the purple and gold. All of the odds r in r favor demonstrate its team-supporting nature.
