If I Was Your Girlfriend was the second single to be released from Prince’s ninth album Sign O’ The Times, released five weeks after the album. The b-side, Shockadelica, was previously-unreleased (although originally intended for the Camille album).

The single is notable as the first Prince-related single to be available on CD; a promotional CD single was available in the USA (the first commercial CD single release was Alphabet St., the following year).

The single reached only number 67 on the US Billboard Pop Chart, but reached number 12 on the Billboard Black Chart. It fared better on the pop chart in the UK, reaching number 20 on the Gallup Singles Chart.
