Telepathy is the first track on Deborah Allen's fourth album Telepathy, and, a few weeks after the album's release, Telepathy was released as the album's first and only single. The track was written and recorded by Prince (under the name Joey Coco). In 1998, the single edit version was included as the sixteenth track on her first compilation album Anthology (marking its first appearance on CD). Basic tracking took place on 7 October 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (the day after a re-recording of Witness 4 The Prosecution, on the same day as disbanding The Revolution, the day before recording Nine and Six And ½). Deborah Allen's vocal overdubs were recorded shortly afterwards in the same studio building, where she was working separately on her album. In late 1993, the song was tried out during early sessions for Mayte's first album at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and was included as the sixth track on an early version of the album, which was titled Latino Barbie Doll at the time. The track was removed when the album evolved into Child Of The Sun, however.
