Emotional Pump is a track recorded on 16 October 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. It was written for (or at least initially offered to) Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, who had influenced Prince greatly (see below for details of her influence). It was sent to her, but she didn’t think it matched her style and she told Prince she couldn’t sing it. The song was released in September 2020 as the first track of Vault Tracks part 3, one of the discs with previously unreleased tracks included with the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition. Additional Information See also Trivia Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition album Joni Mitchell was thanked as "Joni" in the Dirty Mind album notes (as an influence, not as a collaborator). Her name also appeared on the sleeve of the Controversy album in amongst the newspaper clippings in the background. Prince had previously performed Mitchell’s A Case Of You (from Blue 1971) live, and later released a cover version of the track, titled A Case Of U, on his album One Nite Alone.... He had also recorded a cover version of Twisted (by Annie Ross, but covered by Joni Mitchell on Court and Spark 1974), and played it live a few times in 2002. The title of The Time’s Ice Cream Castle was taken from a lyric from Mitchell’s Both Sides, Now (from Clouds 1969, also released as a single in 1968). The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker mentions the song Help Me by Joni Mitchell (from Court And Spark 1974, also released as a single).
