Glam Slam Ulysses is a 1993 stage production, loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey. It combined video and live performance and was advertised as ‘The Homer-Erotic Odyssey of Ulysses and His Gang, “Strays of the World”, Through the Universe of Glam Slam’ and billed as being ‘presented in Glam-o-Rama’ and featuring ‘13 new songs’, where each song was meant to represented an element from Homer’s Odyssey. It was performed at Glam Slam in Los Angeles, California with a capacity of 400 patrons per show for the event. Tickets costed $ 19.99 for the 7:30 shows and $ 15.00 for the Sunday matinees. The show starred Carmen Electra as Penelope and Calypso and ran for a limited time from 21 August 1993 until 4 September 1993. The male lead was performed by Frank Williams and Jamie King provided the choreography. Prince does not appear in the production, but all the music is composed and performed by him. The production was initially thought to be touring the States following its opening stint at the Glam Slam, but reviews were bleak and production was halted after the initial dates were played. Synopsis
The story of Glam Slam Ulysses is a loose translation of the original Greek epic by Homer originates from the 8th Century B.C. Originally an oral tradition passed down for generations, the story likely wasn’t “written” until much later. The Odyssey tells the story of Ulysses’ voyage home to his island of Ithaca and his wife Penelope after a 10-year absence having fought in the Trojan War and being kept prisoner by the sea nymph Calypso. “Ulysses” is his name in Latin – in the original Greek it was “Odysseus,” from which the word “odyssey” is derived.
