Race is the sixth track on Prince’s fifteenth album Come. The previous year, however, and earlier version of the song was included in the Glam Slam Ulysses stage-show, during the segment titled “The Suitors” (credited, as was the whole project, to ).
In 1994, four months before the album’s release, the studio promotional video of Race was included in The Beautiful Experience TV movie (again credited, as was the whole project, to ). In 2001, a slightly remixed version (containing overdubbed samples, spoken by Prince, of "NPG Ahdio"), was included on NPG Ahdio Show # 5 (not available as a separate mp3 download).
Basic tracking took place on 8 November 1991 at the Record Plant, Los Angeles, California (the same day as Go Go Dancer).
The song was re-recorded with the band in mid to late May 1993 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (during the same set of sessions that produced Space, Pope, Strays Of The World, What’s My Name, Interactive and Solo). Prince later reworked the song by himself in the studio and used samples from this new version. The 1991 version and the full band version from 1993 remain unreleased.
The album version begins with a segment of Poem which was edited out when the track became Orgasm (Pheromone, Dark and Letitgo include other segments in their opening seconds).
An early version of the song with Tony M. rapping was one of the Vault tracks recorded between 1990 and 1992 slated to appear on the planned Diamonds & Love expected to be released by The Prince Estate in the summer of 2022. That project, which consisted of material spanning both the Diamonds And Pearls and eras, was reduced to the Diamonds And Pearls era, excluding songs recorded after October 1991 (and this track as a result).
