The Love We Make is the eleventh track on the third disc of Prince's 19th album Emancipation, the third album credited to . Prince has said that he used the song to "speak to the spirit of a friend lost to drugs"; it is believed that this refers to Jonathan Melvoin, Wendy and Susannah Melvoin's brother, keyboard player for The Smashing Pumpkins, who had played on both Around The World In A Day and Parade, and who played keyboard in the live line-up of The Family. Melvoin died of a heroin overdose in New York City on 12 July, 1996.

While specific recording dates are unknown, it is likely that the track was recorded between mid-July (following Jonathan Melvoin's death) and September, 1996 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA.
