- Duane was considered to be Prince’s half-brother, but in fact there was no genetic relation between them. Duane was born two months after Prince Duane was the son of Vivian Nelson, née Howard, a woman Prince’s father John L. Nelson married after divorcing Prince’s mother. Although John L. never officially adopted Duane, he did use the last name Nelson. Duane passed away in 2011.
