I Want U was the first single to be released from Rosie Gaines’ first solo album Closer Than Close. It was released five weeks before the album, and was released worldwide. Several remixes of the song were contained on various formats of the single. I Want U featured Prince as a co-writer, although he did not appear on the track as a musician. The single did not enter the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts, but reached number 90 on the Billboard R&B Charts and number 28 on the Billboard Dance Music - Club Play chart. It fared marginally better in the UK, where it reached number 70 on the UK Gallup Singles Chart. The single was re-released in 2000, containing some additional remixes of the track, and still other remixes have been released on various digital releases of the single.
