A Case Of U (a.k.a. A Case Of You) is the fourth track on Prince’s 25th album One Nite Alone..., but four months before the album’s release, on 17 January 2002, the track was released as an mp3 as part of NPG Music Club Edition # 12, the final edition of the first year of the NPG Music Club. The track is a cover version of the 1971 track A Case Of You by Joni Mitchell (written by Joni Mitchell, from her album Blue), although the first and third verses are omitted in Prince’s version. Interestingly, during his live renditions of this song from 1983 until his penultimate show in 2016, Prince also sang only the second verse and the chorus. In 2007, a slightly edited version (removing the final coda) was included as the sixth track on the compilation album A Tribute To Joni Mitchell (using the original title, A Case Of You).
A brief solo piano rehearsal of the track was released on the 2018 posthumous album Piano & A Microphone 1983.
Specific recording dates are unknown, but it is believed that basic tracking took place in Spring 2001 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (along with the rest of the One Nite Alone... album), during the mastering of The Rainbow Children album. Prince first performed the song in 1983, however (at the 3 August 1983, First Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota concert where I Would Die 4 U, Baby I’m A Star and Purple Rain were recorded), so Prince may have recorded another studio version at an earlier date.
