Merci Miles!, Live At Vienne is a posthumous release of a previously unreleased live performance by Miles Davis recorded on 1 July 1991 at Théâtre Antique in Vienne, France. This is one of Davis’ final performances before his death on 28 September 1991. Merci Miles!, Live At Vienne is the 69th posthumous release overall, including compilations and box-sets.
During this concert, Miles Davis and his band perform tracks from his recent albums :
They also performed three songs that were still unreleased at that time :
- Wrinkle, recorded in 1985 and written by Davis, Attala Zane Giles, Randy Hall and Wayne Linsey. Live versions of the track have been issued over the years but the studio version remains unreleased. Interestingly, the performance included on this album contains an (uncredited) horn interpolation of America.
- Penetration and Jailbait submitted by Prince to Miles Davis in early 1991 and originally recorded during sessions for Madhouse’s third album 24 in 1988. Davis recorded his own versions of the tracks with his musicians. Both Madhouse and Davis’ studio versions remain unreleased.
Promotion
The album was released for the Black Music Month.
Charts
The album reached number 8 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Albums chart and number 9 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
