Boyfriend was first available for download from Prince’s 3rdEyeGirl.com website on 15 February 2013; the track was initially only available briefly, before being taken down. it returned an hour later, now as Boyfriend Demo.
Blogger Dr. Funkenberry tweeted that a longer version would be available in the future, but this has not been confirmed and could simply be speculation, although the "demo" addendum to the title suggests the existence of another version. He later reported in an online video chat that three versions of the song exist, of which the released version was the second.
Boyfriend was included as the third track on a CD found at Paisley Park Studios following Prince’s death, labeled "Live Band Trax". The other tracks (Ain’t Gonna Miss U When U’re Gone, Screwdriver, When She Comes, Shade Of Umber, and The Secret Text) mostly stem from 2012 or early 2013, suggesting that this CD was compiled around that time. It is not known if the version included on the CD was a live in-studio take with the then-nascent 3rdEyeGirl line-up, or the original studio recording for the band members to learn.
It was rumored in 2014 that this song was going to be included on an album to be released under the NPG moniker (along with Shade Of Umber, Screwdriver, Big City, Xtraloveable, Groovy Potential and 2 Y. 2 D., most of them ending up on Hitnrun Phase Two), but this was never confirmed.
While specific recording dates are not known, basic tracking is believed to have taken place in August 2012 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
