Cowgirl is an unreleased song by The Time recorded in June 2001. An early version of this track was recorded in the mid-90’s for an aborted The Time album project called "Old Dogs, New Tricks", but Prince’s involvement on this version is uncertain. The details of this second version are sketchy but the track was likely written by Terry Lewis and performed with an original line-up that includes Larry Graham on bass, Prince and Ronnie Baker Brooks on guitar.
Basic tracking took place as Terry Lewis’s house in Wayzata, Minnesota, USA. Additional recordings took place at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota, USA the following night after Erykah Badu’s concert (during the 2001 “A Celebration” event). This second night of recording was aborted however when Morris Day and Terry Lewis wanted to invite girls to record background vocals with them. Prince questioned the merits of this action and launched into a religious sermon to try to convince those present to become Jehovah’s Witnesses.
In March 2001, Prince announced on his website that he was recording new songs with Morris Day at Paisley Park Studios ("MORRIS DAY is cuttin’ NEW trax in the Park, with JAMIE STARR producing! What time is it?"). Cowgirl may have been part of this project, but this has not been verified. The song remains unreleased.
