Evergreen ("Love Theme from A Star Is Born"), also known as Evergreen is the theme song from the 1976 film A Star Is Born and released on its soundtrack in November 1976. The song, written by Barbra Streisand and Paul Williams and performed by Barbra Streisand, was also released as a single. In her memoir, My Name Is Barbra, Streisand reveals that she was told by a source close to Prince that he recorded his version of Evergreen after having seen the film:
"I sang live again in 2011, when I was singled out by MusiCares, a fabulous organization that helps musicians in need (and they raised $4 million that night !). I love Bill Maher, who was the presenter, and I was announced by Prince, a nice surprise as I'd never met him and had always found him very interesting. He seemed a bit prim and awkward, and I didn't get to the bottom of it until a few years later, because my assistant Grace Handy knew him well. Someone close to Prince told her: “Barbra was one of the very few people Prince really admired and respected. He was very intimidated that day.” Since I admired him, it was funny to learn that he admired me too. Grace told me some wonderful things about him... in December 1976, when he was eighteen, he loved A Star Is Born so much that he saw it six times. The movie poster was the only decoration in his room. He even recorded a demo of Evergreen."
It is possible that this cover was recorded between late December 1976 and early 1977 at Sound 80, Minneapolis, Minnesota but this has not been confirmed.
Prince’s version of Evergreen remains unreleased. It is not known if it was considered for inclusion on any project.
Interestlingly, the second verse opens with the line "Like a rose under the April snow, I was always certain love would grow". Prince will also make reference to the April snow in the song Sometimes It Snows In April.
