F.U.N.K. was originally streamed on PrinceFansUnited.com (also known as "PFU") as PFUnk, within two days of the site's opening, as a 'gift' from Prince in response to the site's criticism of Prince's approach towards fan websites. Prince was said to have written and recorded the track directly in response to the criticism, and offered it to PrinceFansUnited.com as a response, but in fact he only wrote updated lyrics and re-recorded an existing vault track, F.U.N.K.. The following week, it was streamed as the Jam Of The Week on 3121.com using its original title F.U.N.K., and within a few days, F.U.N.K. was available as a stand-alone download single on iTunes. Shelby J. also streamed the track on her MySpace page, along with a brief spoken intro by her (without any known Prince input).
Initial recording dates are unknown, but engineer Jesse Sutcliffe says this song was recorded around the time the Musicology album was conceived which places its initial recording around 2003 or early 2004.
It is believed Prince updated the lyrics and re-recorded the track on 7 November 2007, the day before it was sent to PrinceFansUnited.com.
