For Love, originally listed as 4 Love (Tie U With A Chain), and 4 Love is the sixth track on Jill Jones’s first and only Paisley Park Records album Jill Jones, and, roughly four months after the album’s release, For Love was released as the album’s third and final single. Although Jill Jones was credited as a co-writer, the song was written solely by Prince.
Basic tracking took place on 30 May 1985 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California.
The song was recorded with The Family members Jellybean Johnson, St. Paul Peterson and Eric Leeds who where in town for the shooting of The Screams Of Passion video.
A jam version of the song was also part of the ‘Everybody’s Jam’ played at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California on 5 and 6 January 1986 but this was left unreleased.
Further mixing, overdubbing and editing on the initial version was done in June 1985 and then in late February, early March 1986.
Around the time of the For Love single release, Prince and Jill Jones recorded what could be considered a companion track, 4 Lust, for her planned second album, but the album was never finished and the track remains unreleased.
